The habitat of migratory birds at the Nakdong River, stretching from Dadae-dong, passing through Jangnim-dong and Hadan-dong to Geumgok-dong of Buk-gu and to Myeongji-dong and Jungang-dong of Gangseo-gu, was designated and protected by the Korean government on July 13, 1966 as the Natural Memorial No. 179.
There are many small and big deltas, such as Eulsuk Island and Ilung Island, which are well developed downstream of the Nakdong River. These deltas and riversides are where the fresh water and sea water merge and there are plankton, fish, shellfish and aquatic insects in abundance, thus making it an ideal habitat for the migratory birds.
The Nakdong River estuary climate is perfect for these birds to breed and spend the winter since it is cool in summer and warm in winter. The abundance of food draws about 100,000 migratory birds (10 families - 50 species) from October to March of the following year. It is a spectacular sight to see a large number of birds cover the river and delta and fly up to the sky together.
Natural Monument No. 179 (July 13, 1966)
