Local Military Commander’s Office of Dadaejinseong Fortress

This building was the office of the local military commander during the Joseon period (1392-1910). It was originally located at the site of today’s Dadae Elementary School (1.8 km to the northeast) inside Dadaejinseong Fortress, which was a military outpost affiliated with the Navy Headquarters of West Gyeongsang-do Province. Dadaejinseong Fortress was established in 1490 and remained in use until a new national military system was implemented in 1895.

The local military commander’s office is the only building that remains from Dadaejinseong Fortress. It is unknown when the building was first constructed, but records say it underwent a renovation in 1825. The building was abandoned from 1895 until 1904, when it was repurposed into Dadaepo Private Practical School, the predecessor of Dadae Elementary School. In 1970, due to the construction of the school’s athletic field, the building was disassembled and rebuilt at its current location.

While the size of the building remains the same, its design was significantly altered when it was moved. It originally consisted of a wooden-floor hall in the center with an enclosed underfloor-heated room to each side. However, the building was transformed into an open-air pavilion by removing all the walls, windows, and underfloor heating and replacing the floor with wood only. The building is also known by the name Suhogak, which can be translated as “Pavilion of the Sleeping Tiger,” a metaphor for bravery and resilience.
